..But I am Sorry, but I see plenty of new, polished, shiny racism on my local TV (particularly against Arabs, Asians and the Aboriginals). You should hear some of the things they say on Seven Network or Nine, they manage to insult and degrade an amazing array of people each night in prime-time. Ten, ABC and SBS are hardly any better. In some cases, they are even worse.

Even New Zealand doesn't excape the Australian networks array of insults, generalizations and general condescending nature.

On the other extreme, there is the UK and their tight and strict self-censorship, but that is a subject for another day.

As I said before, its the same old prejudice, just aimed at different people and given a shiny, glossy stainless-steel finish.

They are taking a leaf out of the US TV network book. They are trying to create a culture of fear that drives people to be mindlessly glued to their news service and it just becomes more and more tabloid and populist (low brow politics like racism, etc. the kind of stuff that doesn't appeal to people with the power of thought) to get there advertising dollar. The main part of the Foxification of the news is that they have to create an "other" so that they can have an "us" versus "them". The "other" are the "imagrants stealing our jobs", "poor draining the welfare system", "Asians cheating to do better at school", "Muslims who want to build a school in our idealic (read white) farm community", etc, etc. And whenever someone tries to do something that promotes diversity its "political correctness gone mad". And don't get me started on the repugnant term "un-Australian".

The best thing to do is not watch new TV.

On one bright note, Nine's revivial of "Pyramid" is actually quite good. Certainly not a masterpiece that will be discussed 50 years from now, but generally no better or worse than the average game show made in a country on planet Earth. Which is quite an achievement for Nine!

I remember the old t.v. shows call Hogan's Heros, Flipper, Going Down, Swindlers, You Bet Your Life, Have Gun Will Travel, and Manix, but not thing was as overly defensive as Rat Patrol.

"Hogan's Heroes"...My mother considers it the 3rd worst major sitcom of the 1960's, after "McHale's Navy" and "My Living Doll". My dad thinks Hogan's Heroes is OK and agrees that McHale's Navy is dreadful. Personally, I'd call "Hogan's Heroes" mediocre, "McHale's Navy" to be unwatchable/pathetic and I've never seen "My Living Doll", though from what I've heard, it was already painfully dated when it started production. Perhaps that is why somebody junked the masters of "Doll". So, overall, I really don't want to see "My Living Doll", though, could it really be worse than "Queen for a Day"?

I will hopefully later watch that. Mind you, I'd watch toilets flushing around the world if it was done using the old-style Kodachrome film stock. LOL.

My photographer friend L.B. Jefferies and his girlfriend Carol Fremont were looking out the rear window of their building and claim they saw a man murdering a woman. Fourth floor from down, centre window.

As far as "taking a leaf" from the U.S., as an American I can say you're probably right, not that I would really know because I really don't watch telivision these days as most of it is crap in my opinion. I do like watching some shows like "Smallville" and the more classic older shows, but even then, I would prefer to watch them on dvd than from broadcast because there's too many commercials and too much network bs popping up on the bottom of the screen during the show, which I find annoying and distracting. Also, I find that a lot of stations broadcasting classic tv shows tend to remove footage from the program to accommodate the lengthy commercial breaks and I prefer to see my shows the way they were originally presented. With that said, I'm able to escape the politics and racism of modern television, and if I lived alone, there would likely be no cable hooked up to my house, but I'm married and the Mrs. likes her game shows. Emperor Of Television, you shouldn't feel the need to apologize for what's going on with television as it's something you have no control over, so give yourself a break. Reading your posts, you show me you're one of the good guys.

No one here should apologize for voicing their opinions. Everyone has that right, and should exercise it regularly. But this also goes with knowing when not to speak. For example, Matthew started, and that was great, then guyzilla (i believe) chimed in, and voiced their opinion. That was great! Now, for the most part, I tend to lean to the conservative side, and I don't necessarily agree with guyzilla (sorry... too lazy to go back to see who really replied to Matt the first time) but I applaud him for speaking his mind as well as Matt speaking his mind. I have seen more arguments start when someone responds to an opposing viewpoint with hatred. The same goes for people who don't quite get the concept of "if you can't say something nice, don't say anything at all". That's why we have racism, boys and girls!

I believe there are two sides to absolutely everything. I try very hard to see both sides, but I'm human and when something strikes a nerve with me, I don't stop to see their side of things.

I do believe there is a global southward slide of humanity. For the most part, human beings have allowed themselves to be told what to believe by the media (both left and right leaning) because it's easier that way. They can watch, take in what sounds good and go about their selfish little lives without taking any time to be "others" minded. I see it every day.

People are people. It doesn't matter at all what your skin color is, what your religion is, what country you're from, what social stature you have, what money or posessions you have. None of that really matters. As a species, we've grown so much and so fast with technology, we've left our humanity, our ability to really help each other, our ability to truly love each other by the wayside... and this makes me really sad.
